Local anesthetics are used for pain control and also to reduce any anxiety during any surgical procedure that is performed. The patient is comfortable and allow the surgeon to perform the procedure with ease. Hair transplantation is a minor surgical procedure. Prior selection and administration of anesthetic agent for surgery is important. The operating procedure is aware of the dose, action, duration and potential toxicity. We use short acting and long acting anesthetic agents, that is lidocaine and bupivacaine that is diluted with normal saline and later adrenaline is added externally to achieve vasoconstriction. Lidocaine is a short acting anesthetic to achieve vasoconstriction. It has a quick onset of action fopr 2 – 4 minutes. The effect lasts for 15 to 30 minutes. The duration of action is longer when combined with adrenaline and can last for about 120 minutes. The recommended total dose of lidocaine is about 300 mg in cases of 2 % anesthesia. The amount can be increased when combined with epinephrine to about 500 mg. Coming to bupivacaine, this a long acting anesthetic agent used commonly in hair transplant. Bupivacaine has a slow onset of action compared to lidocaine and a longer duration of action, about 120 to 240 minutes. Usually for field blocks, 0.25% of bupivacaine is used. For peripheral blocks, we can use a concentration of about 0.5%. Before administering the anesthesia directly in to the scalp, we administer regional blocks, which anesthetizes the nerve that supplies the major portion of the donor and the implanted areas. By giving regional anesthetic blocks, we can reduce the delivery of the anesthesia directly into the tissues. For the donor area, we give a regional block by blocking the lesser and greater occipital nerves and for the frontal hairline and the center, we can block the supraorbital and the supratrochlear nerves. Anesthesia is given using the finest needles in titrated quantities during hair transplantation.

M.Ch. Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon
He did his master’s in surgery from BRA (Formerly Agra) University. He then his super specialization in cosmetic and plastic surgery and obtained M.Ch. Degree from IPGME&R under the West Bengal University of Health Science. From his long experience in cosmetic and plastic surgery and the use of advanced Laser, he says that “It is so important to feel confident when considering any cosmetic surgery. Confidence comes from asking questions and getting answers. While I attempt to answer those most frequently asked on this site, I am aware that nothing replaces a personal consultation for answers to personal concerns. One of the most essential parts of my job is to listen carefully and I consider no question too small or unimportant. By listening to you, getting to know you, and truly understanding your needs, I can perform the safest and most efficient procedures available, in accordance with your own personal goals.
Cause of Baldness
The most common type of hair loss in both men and women is referred to as androgenic alopecia men.
Common treatment process followed in our clinic is Follicular unit extraction :
The survival of follicular units upon extraction from the scalp is one of the key variables of successful hair transplantation. If follicular units are transected in the extraction process, there is a greater likelihood that they will not survive the transplant, and the hair transplant will fail. While FUT procedures using strip-harvesting of follicular units typically guarantee a large number of non- transected follicular units, FUE procedures can, and often do, transect grafts, rendering them useless in a transplant.
Types of surgery
There are a number of applications for hair transplant surgery, including:
Androgenetic alopecia

The Patient gets completely natural-looking hair after a hair transplant! You can wash, style, and take care of your new hair just the way you do for your natural hair.
The Patient could notice new hair in a month after surgery. Though in the first month, the newly transplanted hair keeps falling and growing you can observe a significant growth in other 5-6 months.
For complete results, the patient should wait for almost 12 months as this is the period that makes your newly transplanted hair follicles grow and look well. Once your hairs have reached the desired stage, you can opt for an appropriate haircut.
