Synthetic hair implantation /transplant is a treatment for hair loss offered by many centers for hair restoration. Is it an aternative to a hair transplant? In this present age we feel all we desire should be a quick fix- who will wait for a full one year for the resuly of a hair transplant to set in. We are a ‘Grab & Go’ generation.
So this attitude is evident in the field of hair loss as well. When we suffer from hair loss, we need quick solutions. While some will be happy with a hair system or as commonly called- the hair piece, others fall for synthetic hair transplants. Increasingly advertised but not a lot talked about in the patient community is a new fad, the long hair transplant.
Today we will talk of synthetic hair implantation. This is a controversial procedure due to its infamous chequered history. It achieved widespread usage in the 70s, but got banned in 1983.
The product went out of repute due to some 5 complications listed here-
1. Recurrent infection
2. Possibility of carcinogenicity
3. Cicatricial alopecia
4. Granulomatous hypersensitivity
5. Cyst formation
However, some centers continue to perform this procedure in India. And they do report good results and must be getting patients willing for the procedure. Companies market it as a simple cosmetically effective remedy but the product has not yet found widespread acceptance.
The relatively recent memory of its being in disrepute in the past continues to hant manufacturers and promoters.
If it did not have the complications listed, it would be ideal for:
1. Small areas of hair loss like the forelock or parting line in women who are in a hurry to cover that area with no down time due to a pressing upcoming social commitment.
2. Diabetics who are otherwise not candidates for a hair transplant and need small areas restored like the temples or a small crown balding.
