Dr. Robert M. Bernstein of Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration performs the recipient site creation step in an FUE Hair Transplant procedure and describes the process in detail. Also watch our video of robotic recipient site creation with the ARTAS FUE robot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUhHhIyt5hw

In the video, Dr. Bernstein explains the reason why, in FUE, recipient sites are created before grafts are extracted. Recipient sites are tiny holes created in the balding area into which follicular units are inserted in a hair transplant. Surgeons used to harvest grafts first and then create recipient sites. In this video, Dr. Bernstein explains why switching the order of these steps is a key improvement to the FUE procedure. “Pre-making” recipient sites is beneficial because it reduces the overall time grafts are out of the body and allows the scalp to begin the healing process, creating a “fertile bed” for the implanted follicular unit grafts to take root and grow. Both of these processes contribute to increased graft survival. Dr. Bernstein was the first to describe “pre-making” recipient sites in FUE into medical literature.
