Life has various aspects. You may have many troubles or you may have a lot of fun. You may be in an abyss of despair or you may be at the pinnacle of your popularity. So life can be compared to the sky. For one example, when you are happy, you can feel like fine weather. For another example, when you are unhappy, you can feel like cloudy weather. When you cry, you can be compared with rainy weather. Your emotions change easily. The sky changes easily, too. In short, life is the sky.

“What is a life?” is a question that nobody can answer. But a lot of people have tried to compare it to something, for example, a journey or a voyage. I think it is a play.
The life of someone is a drama in which he plays the leading character. Of course, there are many kinds of dramas. Similarly, there are many kinds of lives. There is comedy and tragedy in them. In addition, a drama is based on logical development. Life is, too. Sad incidents and happy incidents for the protagonist are repeated forever in a short life as well as in a drama. While people spend their daily lives, they are apt to create false selves and wear masks. So, sometimes, it is even said that people have an illusion of playing a role in some drama.
I think, though, there is one point on which they aren’t similar. It is having no scenario like a drama. In brief, the author of the drama whose name is Life is you. Therefore, whether the drama is good or not depends on your effort and will.

Life Is a Voyage
A voyage was the biggest challenge in life a long time ago. At that time, ships were made of wood. Sails were made of cloth. The ship was at the mercy of the elements. When the wind was blowing hard, the ship ran smoothly, but when it was a still day, the ship couldn’t move at all. Moreover, when there was a storm, there was the threat of capsizing. Thus, the voyage depended entirely on the weather. I think life is such a voyage.

An Oil Painting
I think life is an oil painting. I learned how to paint in oils when I was freshman in high school. You have to paint the canvas a dull color first. My art teacher told me that the dull color underneath makes the bright colors richer and deeper. I think this is similar to life. We have to get over many difficulties during our lives. However, they make us grow into deeper persons. If we don’t experience hard or bitter events, our behavior will remain shallow.

Life is a river. Its stream is fast and slow. Our life is not always happy or sad. A river’s current is not constant. Not only its stream but also its appearance varies. In certain places a river is dirty or clear as if it represents the good and evil of human beings. A river can be compared to one human life, but a famous poet said, “Life is a drop of water in the Nile.” What a sad sentence this is! Did he think a human being is a very petty presence? No, he tried to get us to compare the Nile with human history. I don’t live in the past or the future, but in a particular now. We should celebrate our presence in history. As soon as I hear the words “human life,” I remember this sentence. I think about how human life compares with water. Water is soft and weak, but a lot of water kills everything in its path and makes iron rust. Water seems weak but it is very strong. One person is very weak but a lot of people are very strong. Human beings are water. Life is a river.

Inconstant Life
Life is weather. It changes quickly. Sometimes it rains cats and dogs but sometimes it doesn’t. Life is just the same. For example, I sometimes feel sad when I’m scolded by a teacher or when I quarrel with my friends. However, the span of grief doesn’t last long. In a week, I’m praised by the teacher or I can talk to the friends with whom I had been quarreling. Thus, I keep in mind that life is wonderful even when I don’t find my life interesting at all.

Life is a VMW. This means that life is dynamic. Life is full of ups and downs, so we are always acting very energetically. The high-performance engine enables us to do something easily and efficiently. Here, the high-performance engine is like our minds or spirits. However, they have one defect. It is that engines sometimes get overheated. Due to this, we occasionally can’t do anything and can be frustrated. Life as a BMW also means that life is pleasant. The catch phrase of BYM is “Freude am fahren,” which means something like “a joy to drive.” When we are despondent, we can get over it somehow thanks to this delight. We can break through whatever difficulties we face. That is why life is a BMW.

Life is a voyage because life is a sequence of difficulties and a voyage is, too. A boat sails through the turbulent waves on a voyage. People voyage to their destination. These things are the same for our lives. We sometimes hit a barrier, but we need to get over it at all costs. We can arrive at our goals. This way, destinations will be reached. Therefore, life and voyages are very similar.
